Why Mobile is Important in Social Recruitment

Why Mobile is Important in Social Recruitment This is part 2 of our series examining the major trends that are shaping the future of successful hiring practice. In our last post we looked at the importance of sales and marketing tools to recruiters. Here we focus on the popularised concept of ‘social recruitment’ and its impact on companies’ hiring strategy. Social recruitment, occurring at the intersection of recruitment and the embryonic field of social media, appears under different guises. It has 2 central functions: Increasing a company’s reach by spreading jobs and relying on the social currency of others to disperse them further Actively searching for candidates via publicly available information on social networks It fits within the changing framework of recruitment successful employers are ‘pulling’ information, no longer simply ‘pushing’ jobs. Today’s candidate is keenly aware of how they should be treated, and companies are focusing more on interaction and valuable content. The sheer number of social networks and the time that candidates spend in these channels gives employers a golden opportunity to effectively spread content. What are the best ways to use social media? There are 3,318,641 ‘Social Media Managers’ listed on LinkedIn, but it’s interesting to see the rising scepticism towards the position. Every department is now expected to be proficient online, and there’s less reliance on self-professed ‘gurus’. Recruiters, for example, are looking to leverage social data for candidate insights. The most successful sourcers approach this field with care though, currently there is over 2.7 zettabytes of social data on the web so a targeted approach is important. Today’s candidates want recruiters to have a better understanding of job opportunities and how their skills match up as Acas’ recent research paper shows, they’re less receptive to classic ‘spray and pray’ tactics. Passive candidates’ LinkedIn and Twitter profiles can help companies effectively engage at the pre-application stage. ‘Engagement’ is key here blasting job tweets is ineffectual and irritating. The most effective employers gain candidate trust and interest by joining popular discussions and looking to provide value prior to engagement. This does impact the recruitment cycle a little, more time needs to be set aside to build relationships. The investment is often worth it though 34% of companies have gathered candidate information from Facebook, and 14% have used Twitter to make a successful hire. How to establish a connection: Social media is all about establishing an employee-candidate connection and getting potential applicants to buy into a company’s culture, the specific platform matters less. Deloitte uses bloggers to write about what they love about the company, and share content that interests them. By producing great content and harnessing their social reach across different platforms, they were able to produce 234% more traffic from Social Media than other sources, with 63% of their visitors directly from the blog. Only 2% of actual hires came directly from social media, but the indirect benefits are clear. Social platforms let companies quickly relate to candidates on a personal level, handle feedback and ensure that they’re happy with the application experience. Maintaining a positive recruitment brand is increasingly important in the modern era with companies like Glassdoor providing an inside look at the interview process social media can send bad reputations viral. Social platforms can have a critical effect on the speed of employer-candidate interactions, with the average response to a ‘push’ notification on Twitter 3 minutes, compared to 3 days with email. How important are mobiles? Mobile devices and social media are inextricably linked. Almost 90% of job seekers are now looking to use their smart phones to search for jobs, and a mobile-optimized experience is proving even more important than in marketing 2/3 of workers searching for jobs via mobile devices will walk away if careers sites are not mobile-optimized, and 40% walk away with a more negative opinion of the company. Its not surprising that the mobile experience has become one of the most important topics in the recruitment sphere, and yet as few as 1 in 10 companies have made steps to enable a mobile experience for candidates. Convenience dictates that this trend will only increase, ours is very much a quick fix culture and, although it might sound melodramatic, companies who don’t take heed may have no candidates in 10 years time! Why Do I Put My Jobs in Order of Sequence?

Why Do I Put My Jobs in Order of Sequence? When writing a resume, it is a good idea to write it in chronological order. This will help you avoid putting your jobs in order of the most important.Sometimes, your resume gets read and even edited by more than one person before it reaches you. What this means is that everyone puts their jobs in order of most important first, second and third. This makes it harder to remember if you put yours in order of sequence. The problem with this is that if someone finds something on your resume that you didn't intend to include, your chances of getting that job is diminished. In fact, the chronological order of your jobs can sometimes times get mixed up in your mind and you end up putting your jobs in the wrong order. It is much better to write your resume chronologically and ensure that you give people the impression that you are the best candidate for the job. This helps to ensure that the person reading your resume will be able to look at your resum e and come up with a short list of the job titles that they think are relevant to the position you are applying for. For example, if you're applying for a job as a waiter, they will list your positions as waitresses, servers and bussers. The waitresses and servers positions are what most people associate with being waiters. Therefore, your resume should list your jobs in the order they were listed on your resume and not alphabetically by job title. You need to make sure that it appears in a way that makes sense to your reader. While people read resumes, some take time and some read just the first page. If you leave a gap between your jobs, it is only natural for them to assume that you just went on to the next job. You want to make sure that you list each position in order of when it was listed on your resume. When your resume is written in this way, it also helps to ensure that you are writing about the job titles that you were hired for. If you have the impression that you have put t he wrong job title at the wrong position, then this will hurt your chances of getting that position. Do not list jobs in reverse order or list the wrong job title at the wrong position.By taking the time and making sure that you put your jobs in order of sequence, you will ensure that you get the right resume out there. By putting the order in, people will not be able to come up with the reverse of that when looking at your resume.

Four Words You Never Say to Your Boss! - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Four Words You Never Say to Your Boss! - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career You dont repair that relationship by sitting down and talking about trust or making promises. Actually, what rebuilds it is living it and doing things differently and I think that is what is going to make the difference.?Patricia Hewitt Im  sharing an experience I had with a recent client to highlight the following career advice: Sometimes achieving success and reaching ones career goals is merely a matter of changing a single behavior.    As a career coach, I assist clients in various aspects of their career development: From choosing a major and minor to study in college that matches my clients unique interests and aptitude, to selecting a sustainable industry that suits his/her skills and interests, choosing a suitable location to live and launch a first (or second) career, and all the details that go into marketing themselves e.g. interviewing skills, resume writing and so on.  Included in this mix of career services is often helping my clients identify an obstacle (in their behavior or in a strategy) thats holding them back from achieving their maximal potential in the hiring process and in earning promotions, or from acquiring new business. Ann attended a top university, was highly skilled in her field and yet was consistently turned down for promotions and raises despite her being considered top talent. Ann is poised, attractive, well dressed, articulate and makes a great first impression so its understandable why she interviewed well and could land a great job straight out of college. Her problem was that she  consistently showed up late to work and frequently canceled on her employer.  Heres a snapshot of our coaching sessions and the advice that followed: Ann said the reason she hired me as a coach was that she was having difficulty juggling her work and personal responsibilities and wanted some advice on how to create a more productive and less insane life for herself. She admitted that her personal issues were beginning to cloud her thinking at work and causing her to become forgetful and scattered and she wanted some objective advice on how she could improve her situation. She wasnt clear as to what was holding her back from developing a good rapport with her co-workers and her boss as she felt strongly her skills and contributions were adding value to her employer. After some discussion, we discovered that  Anns main problem at work was her lack of accountability. Ann started out strong in her new role at work, showing great promise with her technical skills as a software engineer and in her ability to communicate solutions to her team.  Ann said that lately her colleagues and her boss were treating her differently, with less respect.  I inquired if any of her behaviors may have triggered a negative response from her boss and she admitted that her attendance at work had been erratic and her colleagues stopped talking to her when shed arrive late to scheduled meetings. Ann said that she tried to compensate for showing up late by taking on more work but she felt her co-workers were a bit hostile toward her and one person remarked that Anns good at getting away with being careless. She also felt they were becoming less inclusive of her in social situations after work. It was clear to me that if she persisted with this behavior she would inevitably end up unemployed without any recommendations from her current employers to leverage this position for another one. This was an S.O.S. career coach call. Ann arrived 15 minutes late to her first coaching session. She canceled the second session and again arrived late for her third appointment. Typically I would not charge someone for being late if it was a one time event, but in Anns case I realized that her tardiness was a symptom of a bigger problem. She seemed to always have a great excuse for why shes late or why she needs to cancel at the last-minute and excuses herself by saying it was unavoidable. Her apology for her consistent tardiness and absence was wrought with denial that she had any part of the wrongdoing. The first time she said, Im sorry but  I cant be split into two people and the second time and third time she excused her tardiness saying,  It wasnt my fault.   This particular phrase rubbed me the wrong way. She made it sound like it was my flaw in some way for expecting her to show up and be on time!  It became evident  to me that Anns problems at work were tied to her denial of her mistakes. Only once she recognized the gravity of her negligent behavior could she then regret it and desire to change her ways. My goal was to help Ann recognize the dysfunctional behavior that was impeding her career advancement before it would cause permanent damage to her reputation. Before I could begin coaching Ann on how to prioritize her various tasks at work and at home, I needed to convince her that her current behavior would eventually lead to her demise at work and that she needed to adopt an emotionally mature mindset immediately: In order to improve in this area she would first need to accept that she had done something wrong and feel some healthy remorse for her mistakes. Heres the 5 steps I shared with Ann that helped her become accountable and enabled her to adopt a new approach to managing her busy life. 5 steps to becoming accountable and managing a busy life 1. Accept that you have a problem 2. Desire to fix the problem: All real change is rooted in what a person desires. Thoughts affect actions so changing ones thoughts will open the door for new behaviors. 3. Regret the behavior: If you dont really regret the behavior no real change can take place. Regret and a healthy dose of guilt can be the impetus for change (as long as you dont go overboard and become paralyzed by guilt). 4. Find a new behavior to substitute for the negative one:  This is the exciting, proactive part of the process for changing a behavior.  Find another behavior that is the exact opposite and start doing that consistently.  The positive affect of trying on a new behavior is a secret to changing a character flaw. Swing to the right implementing this new positive behavior (even if it feels a bit extreme) in order to eventually come back to the center! 5. Implement this new behavior  for a full month!  Theres nothing more important when it comes to building trust and credibility  than being accountable for your behavior. Your words matter and when you make a commitment to someone (especially your boss) make sure you follow-up with your promise;  If your word can be trusted youll benefit from having a good name. In fact, having a good name can become a part of your legacy. Warren Buffet, Bill Gates are great examples of people who became super successful and built a good name into their legacy. In order to preserve your reputation and maintain respect from colleagues and your superiors, make sure you think first before you agree to take on a commitment. Once you say yes may it be to attending a function, an assignment, a charitable gift or for assisting someone the worst thing you can do is not follow through and use a lame excuse like its not my fault. Since everyone makes occasional mistakes, the best thing to do when you cant follow through is to accept responsibility for the mishap. People tend to forgive and have respect for those who readily admit to a mistake and show regret. The opposite is true for those who rationalize and project  blame on others:  This behavior is viewed as a sign of weakness and wreaks of emotional immaturity. The best employees are not necessarily ones who never err but they are ones who consistently learn from their mistakes and accept responsibility for them when something goes awry. Once Ann admitted to herself that she lacked accountability and it was limiting her ability to advance in her firm, she was able to take the necessary steps to improve her situation: She realized that projecting her problem onto someone else was slowly but steadily chipping away at her reputation. She admitted to herself and to me that she could understand how her ignoring this character flaw would eventually lead to her losing all her credibility. She stopped rationalizing her tardiness and committed herself to a behavior modification program to stop this behavior.    Acknowledging this was a major breakthrough for her as we then could begin to discuss which of her commitments were top priorities and which were  less-essential. Ann then made a new daily schedule prioritizing her main tasks. I applaud anyone who is intellectually honest with themselves in facing their personal challenges. If you truly desire  change and pave a new path for constructive behaviors nothing will get in your way.  Its possible to overcome any character flaw if you can regret the behavior, commit to change and substitute a new behavior in its place.  Sometimes it requires swinging to the opposite side of the behavior spectrum.  In Anns case, she committed herself to arriving minutes early for a full month; Now, six months later, Ann says she feels great about being a more reliable, accountable person.  Her boss has noticed the difference in her behavior and their relationship has become more trusting, her co-workers are including her in their regular outings after hours and who knows she might even receive that promotion shes working toward by the end of this year. Considering Relocating For a Better Job

Considering Relocating For a Better Job Would you ever move for a better job? It could be a transfer from the company where you currently work, or you might land an incredible position with another firm. Some people would say yes in a heartbeat, but others can struggle with the uncertainty of such a big change. If you’re thinking of relocating for work, here are a few points to consider. Is Relocating The Right Decision? There’s no ‘one answer fits all’ here, relocating is such a personal decision since everyone’s situation is so different. If you’re young and single and don’t have too many major ties to where you currently live, then picking up and leaving probably won’t cause you too many issues. But if you’re married with children, and have other responsibilities in your life (perhaps helping to care for an elderly relative) then these things could all throw a spanner in the works. You’d have to consider whether it’s practical since moving children’s schools. Plus your spouse would have to find a new workplace too, this would all come as a result of moving elsewhere. It doesn’t mean to say it’s not possible of course, but there are a number of practicalities to consider. Another thing you’d need to think about is if the company you’re going to be working for is stable. If they’re just getting off the ground or have had financial issues previously then it could give you a reason to stop and think. Be sure that they are committed to you as an employee, helping you with relocation costs is a good sign. What Will You Do About Your House? If you’re currently renting, you’ll need to go about ending your tenancy. If you’re still under contract, you will need to find out about the logistics of getting out of it since there might be fees to pay. What if you own your house, will you be selling it or renting it out? Selling frees up funds to buy another property elsewhere. Or you might consider renting at the new location for a while to see how everything goes. That way you still have your home to return to just in case it doesn’t go as planned. You’ll need to contact local movers and find a company that’s happy to move you to your new location. If you’re moving abroad or traveling a long way, it could be easier, and you’d save on costs by selling your larger items and buying them new at the new property. Where Will You Live If you’re relocating alone, it could be a case of finding an apartment close to where you will be working. But if you’re moving with a family, finding a new property will be trickier. You will need somewhere that’s close to good schools and parks for your children. If your spouse has managed to find a job in the new area already, you’ll need to find a property that’s not too far from their work too. You’ll need to take time out of your schedule to travel to the new area to view houses and sign any relevant paperwork too. So this is something worth considering in the planning stages. Especially if you’re relocating somewhere that’s a fair distance away. Photo source

Mommys Hopes and Promises - Cubicle Chic

A Letter to Sophia // Mommy's Hopes and Promises - Cubicle Chic A Letter to Sophia // Mommy’s Hopes and Promises Lifestyle February 27, 2019 2 CommentsDear Sophia,I just put you down for the third nap today. Watching your sleeping face brings mommy so much joy. It’s the kind of joy that makes mommy wonder what I ever did to deserve you in my life. The last 3 months of  daddy and mommy’s life have been a whirlwind, but undoubtedly the best 3 months of our lives. In preparation for your arrival, we read books, watched videos, took classes, and asked our  friends about how to be the best parents. We took things very seriously, stressed and strived. But the one thing that we weren’t prepared for is the kind of joy and happiness that you would bring to our life.   It’s inexplicable, and has turned mommy into a total cliche because I literally cannot believe how much I love you!Mommy has thought long and hard about the kind of mom I wanted to be. You see, I have hopes and dreams as a mom, but I was always afraid that they would be self-centered and selfish. My hopes and dreams would be about what you want, what you hope for in life, and how you want to live your life. Of course, I will be there to guide you and shape your beliefs in the early years, but we will be learning wheels and not crutches, counselors and not constraints. Whenever mommy has a quiet moment to look at you with no distraction, mommy thinks about the future. Mommy thinks about what I can do to make sure that you grow up to be a happy, confident, courageous, and good-hearted person. Most importantly, mommy thinks about how our relationship will be, and that I want to be your friend when you grow up more than just being your mom.As your 100-day birthday approaches, mommy decided to collect these thoughts and write you a letter.   It’s funny how as we live life, life itself gets in the way of us enjoying the little precious moments. This is Mommy’s way of putting the moments in a glass jar… and saving it for you to savor and relish when you are ready. Mommy is a mere mortal and a very flawed one a t it, and there will probably be moments in your life when you wonder if mommy ever loved you. If you have doubts… remember this:When you are old enough to read this letter one day, know that since the moment they first laid your bare body on my chest with the umbilical cord still connecting us, I have not loved anyone more in this world.Mommy promises to always consider your perspective in everythingMommy promises to listenMommy promises to always be your friendMommy promises to always laugh with youMommy promises no matter how busy life gets, to always pay attention to youMommy promises to always try to be a better mom  Mommy hopes to help you see the best in yourself and in othersMommy hopes to appreciate the beauty in this world with youMommy hopes that you become an optimistic, empathetic, and warm personMommy hopes that the  failures you experience in life always teach you valuable lessonsMommy hopes that someday you will love someone as much as mommy has loved you  ++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Note:I’m a very reflective and introspective person. I’ve always been. But nothing has made me re-examine everything I know, believe, and care about like the arrival of Sophia did.In the early phase of my pregnancy, I was very anxious about the fact that I was becoming a mom. If you read my post about things that no one tells you about being pregnant, the throbbing sense of anxiety is unmistakable. I worried that I wasn’t up for the task. I was glad that I had 9 months to think myself through this lack of confidence. Yet it wasn’t time that I needed. I simply needed to meet her. It’s strange. The closest description I have for the transformation I experienced is that it’s magical, powerful, and unimaginable even for the most creative minds. The overwhelming sense of affection, obligation, and attachment I feel toward my daughter is  something that I could not have fathomed before. It’s nothing short of eye-opening. The most distinguished way that this experience has changed me is my attitude towards the unknown. I’ve always been the type of person that sees more threat and danger in the unknown of the future than opportunities and growth. But motherhood, specifically the joy that emerged with it, has changed my belief. I realized that the mind simply isn’t capable of grasping the good the future could bring. Even if it does, the logical part of our brain will suppress it. With this experience, I’ve become more optimistic about the future in general. I often catch myself looking forward to all the things I will get to do with Sophia in the future. The panic and anxiety that I experienced when I first became pregnant are no longer.   Even though I am more sleep deprived than ever and do not have the freedom I used to have in the conventional sense, I am more at peace, content, and fulfilled than ever.
